Alterra, Technip Energies and Neste launch modular plastics-recycling platform

This article was originally posted on Chemical Engineering Online.
Summary
Alterra Energy, Technip Energies, and Neste launched Nerea™, a standardized, modular industrial offering to accelerate chemical recycling of plastic waste. By shifting from bespoke engineering to pre-engineered modules, Nerea aims to cut project risk, cost, and time-to-market for waste operators, project developers, refiners, and petrochemical companies. The platform combines Alterra’s plastics liquefaction know-how with Technip Energies’ engineering and Neste’s upgrading/offtake capabilities to convert hard-to-recycle plastics into petrochemical feedstocks compatible with existing assets, supporting faster scale-up of circular polymers.

What do you think will most speed adoption of modular chemical recycling—clear policy incentives, long-term offtake agreements, or standardized product/feedstock specifications?

Alterra Energy (Akron, Ohio), Technip Energies (Paris), and Neste (Espoo, Finalnd) announced the commercial launch of Nerea™, a new type of industrial offering designed to accelerate the deployment of chemical recycling projects for plastic waste. By transitioning from bespoke engineering to a standardized product model, Nerea enables waste operators, project developers, refining and petrochemical players […]

Standardization helps, but success will hinge on feedstock prep and upgrading to cracker-ready specs. Do the Nerea modules include integrated dechlorination and hydrotreating, and what ppm limits are you guaranteeing for Cl, Br, and metals in the pyrolysis oil? Also, how are char and off-gas managed to simplify air permitting and residue disposal?
