Summary
Algeria’s state energy company Sonatrach and Germany’s utility VNG AG signed a memorandum of understanding to explore cooperation on green hydrogen development and methane emissions reduction, with the agreement signed at Sonatrach’s Algiers headquarters.

What opportunities and hurdles do you see for an Algeria–Germany partnership on green hydrogen and methane abatement?

Sonatrach (Algiers, Algeria), the state-owned energy company of Algeria, announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with German utility firm VNG AG to explore cooperation in green hydrogen development and methane emissions reduction, according to a company statement. Big variable is the export vector: ammonia with German cracking vs pipeline blending - what’s the current thinking given transport costs and timelines? Also, water sourcing and uptime in sandy, high-heat sites (desal, robust pre-filtration, cooling) plus credible methane MRV to meet EU rules will make or break bankability.

Green H2 there lives or dies on water and export: what’s the plan for demin feed/brine disposal, and is the product moving as ammonia, LOHC, or an H2-ready pipeline - with O2/H2 purges interlocked and embrittlement managed? For methane cuts, continuous LDAR, dry-gas seal upgrades, and flare/blowdown recovery need to be in scope; otherwise, well, there’s your problem.

Green H2 in Algeria lives or dies on water and transport. Are they pairing electrolyzers with coastal desal and going ammonia or LOHC for export, or betting on pipeline blending despite embrittlement limits in old steel? On methane, swap high-bleed pneumatics, add VRUs, and tighten compressor seals to bank reductions now while the H2 kit gets built.
