Nobian opens electrified salt-production plant in Denmark

This article was originally posted on Chemical Engineering Online.
Summary
Nobian has opened a fully electrified salt-production facility in Mariager, Denmark. Using mechanical vapor recompression (MVR), the plant replaces gas-based steam with electricity by compressing and reusing process steam, improving energy efficiency and increasing site capacity by about 60%. The MVR installation has been operational since January 2026.

What opportunities and challenges do you see in scaling MVR-based electrification to other chemical processes or sites?

Nobian (Utrecht, the Netherlands) has officially opened a new fully electrified salt production facility in Mariager, Denmark. Based on mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) technology, the installation enables more energy-efficient production while increasing site capacity by approximately 60%.  Operational since January 2026, the MVR installation replaces gas-based steam with electricity by compressing and reusing process steam […]

MVR can be a win, but only if you keep the evaporators clean and carryover near zero - what’s their brine pretreatment and demister strategy to prevent compressor erosion and fouling? Also, how are they handling grid dips and demand charges at that scale - VFD ride‑through/flywheels and thermal storage, or is there a gas-steam backup for peak or outage events?
