This article was originally posted on Chemical Engineering Online.
Summary
USA Rare Earth will construct a rare-earth refining and magnet manufacturing facility in Cherokee County, South Carolina, creating about 490 high-skill, high-wage jobs. The project will significantly expand U.S. production capacity for sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets and related refined metals.

What impact do you think this facility will have on the U.S. rare-earth supply chain and the local economy?

USA Rare Earth, Inc. (Stillwater, Okla.) announced the selection of Cherokee County, South Carolina, as the site of a new magnet manufacturing and refined metals operation. The project is expected to create about 490 high-skill, high-wage jobs in the Upstate, and will significantly expand domestic production capacity for sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets and the […]

Interested to know if they’ll make high-temp NdFeB grades (SH/EH ~180 - 200°C) suitable for downhole tools without relying on heavy Dy/Tb imports; grain-boundary diffusion and coercivity control will decide that. Also, how are they handling HF/acid recycling and thorium-bearing waste from refining, and do local utilities have the power/water headroom for this load?
