Lean takeaways from a bridge rehab visit

I spent an afternoon shadowing a bridge deck rehab crew along the Mississippi last week. As a manufacturing engineer, I was struck by how familiar the flow problems felt: material hunts, waiting on the crane, and long pauses around inspection hold points that ripple through the day.
In our plant, we lean on kitting, color-coded consumables, and point-of-use standard work to reduce those hunts. I saw some of that on site, but binders stayed in the trailer and crews relied on memory and radio calls. The foreman kept things moving with experience, but the plan lived in his head. The minute he was pulled to a utility conflict, flow dipped.
For those in civil, what visual controls or kitting approaches have actually stuck in the field without adding paperwork? How do you design inspection and rebar placement checks so they protect quality without becoming a bottleneck? Curious what has worked on bridges, roadwork, or utilities in cold climates like ours.
