World’s largest e-methanol reactor delivered in major decarbonization initiative

This article was originally posted on Chemical Engineering Online.
Summary
Icelandic firm Carbon Recycling International (CRI) has delivered and installed the largest e-methanol reactor of its kind—its proprietary methanol converter—for the Liaoyuan E-Methanol Project in Jilin Province, China. The installation marks a major construction milestone, and the project remains on track for commissioning and startup later this year as part of a broader decarbonization initiative.

What impact do you think this reactor could have on accelerating e-methanol adoption and industrial decarbonization in China and beyond?

Operationally, can the loop follow intermittent green H2 - what turndown is proven without hurting Cu/ZnO catalyst life? And how are you managing recycle purge and heat/water integration (e.g., purge recovery via PSA/methanation, condenser duty to preheat electrolyzer feed)?

Curious what turndown and start-stop cycle counts this converter is rated for with electrolyzer-driven H2 variability, and how they’re managing the exotherm under rapid ramps. Also, what’s the catalyst protection and interlock scheme for sulfur/chloride slip and O2 breakthrough, and is recycle compressor surge control tied to feed trip logic?
