AFRY AB has been awarded an engineering assignment by greentech firm Kanadevia Inova for what’s described as the U.K.’s first full-scale carbon-capture facility in the waste-to-energy sector. The project is being developed by Encyclis, a major U.K. energy-from-waste operator, in partnership with Kanadevia Inova, marking a key step toward decarbonizing municipal waste power generation.

What do you think is the biggest hurdle to scaling carbon capture at U.K. waste-to-energy plants—technology maturity, CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, permitting, or financing?

WtE flue gas is much dirtier than gas-fired; if pre-treatment and mist elimination aren’t oversized, the amine loop becomes a foaming, corrosive sludge pit and the HMI turns into an alarm wall. What solvent and reclaim plan are they using, and are they interlocking CO2 compression/absorber trips to a clean bypass so the boiler stays online?

WtE flue gas is nasty: high O2, HCl, SOx/NOx and trace metals chew up amine systems and drive amine slip unless you tame aerosols. What solvent and front-end cleanup are they planning (WESP + DCC + polishing scrubber), are they using duplex internals and inhibitors for chloride and oxidative degradation, and how much steam draw are they budgeting from the turbine for capture versus export?
