STV and MTA Construction & Development opened ADA accessibility upgrades at the 149 St-Hostos station in the Bronx, a key 2/4/5 transfer hub, adding new elevators, reconfigured stairs, and modernized communications, security, and safety systems while keeping service running and preserving the station’s 120-year-old, National Register-listed headhouse. The project boosts circulation for thousands of riders and advances the MTA’s goal of making 95% of the system accessible by 2055, with STV serving as lead designer.
The upgrades add ADA-compliant access to a critical transfer hub serving the 2, 4 and 5 subway lines while preserving the station’s historic character and maintaining service throughout construction.
As lead designer for the MTA Construction & Development design-build program, STV is providing station, civil and site design for new ADA-compliant elevators, reconfigured stairways and upgrades to communications, security and safety systems. The effort also includes the restoration and adaptive reuse of the station’s historic 120-year-old headhouse, which is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The project improves access and circulation throughout the station while helping the MTA advance its broader goal of making 95% of the system accessible by 2055.
“Accessible transit is ultimately about economic opportunity,” said Marcos Díaz González, regional transportation president at STV. “When people can navigate a station safely, independently and with confidence, they gain greater access to jobs, healthcare, education and their communities. Projects like the 149 St-Hostos station demonstrate how thoughtful design can modernize critical infrastructure with minimal disruptions to riders.”
