Don’t alarm what you won’t act on

Spent last night babysitting an alarm flood on a feed pump start. HMI lit up like a pinball machine: low suction pressure, seal pot low, motor overload warm, min-flow not proven, discharge low-flow… Operators were riding ACK like it was a solution. Well, there’s your problem: five alarms screaming about one condition - no NPSH at cold start.
The fix wasn’t more alarms. We added permissives: no start unless tank level > X, suction block proved open, min-flow valve open limit made, and VFD ramp extended. We pushed the “low suction pressure” nag down to an event during start sequence, kept a single high-value trip to protect equipment, and tightened the min-flow recycle control. Net result: zero nuisance, zero cavitation, no heroics.
My rule: if it needs immediate operator action, alarm. If it can damage equipment or violate process limits, interlock it. If it’s just FYI, log it. Five ways to say the same thing is noise.

On HVAC pumps I treat anything that can hurt equipment as a start permissive or interlock: system static pressure above setpoint, isolation and bypass valves end-switched, VFD ready and HOA in Auto, clamp minimum speed for 20 - 30 s, then prove flow or DP within a window and trip if not made. Alarms get a delay and only fire if the condition persists after the start window; favorite add-ons are strainer DP not high, chiller or condenser enable proven, and a lockout after three failed starts so no one is riding ACK all night.

I use a time-to-damage test: if it can wreck the pump in under 10 seconds, interlock it; minutes-scale hazards get an alarm; anything expected during ramp is an event with a timer. Non-negotiable permissives: suction strainer DP < limit, seal pot pressure/level above minimum (Plan 52/53), min-flow valve open proven, suction block proved, recirc destination available, and product temp above Tmin so NPSHa margin is real. Add first-out cause capture and startup-specific alarm inhibition so the one bad actor stands out instead of a pinball show.
