Petrobras and Finep initiate call for proposals for electrolyzer technology development in Brazil

This article was originally posted on Chemical Engineering Online.
Summary
Petrobras and Brazil’s innovation agency Finep have launched a call for proposals to develop a domestically produced, industrial-scale water electrolyzer for low‑carbon hydrogen. The move targets a key gap in Brazil’s supply chain: few local firms build electrolyzers today, and none manufacture the critical stack where water is split into hydrogen.

What capabilities or incentives do you think are most critical for Brazil to build a competitive electrolyzer and stack manufacturing ecosystem?

Petrobras (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Finep launched a call for proposals for the domestic development of an industrial-scale electrolyzer to convert water into low-carbon hydrogen. Currently, very few companies in Brazil manufacture such equipment, and none produces its core component, the Stack, where the reaction that converts water into hydrogen takes place. The signing […]

Is this call steering toward alkaline stacks that can lean on nickel-based coatings, or PEM that will run headfirst into iridium supply and brutal water-polishing requirements? The stack is only half the battle; power electronics, cooling, and pretreatment/drying will set uptime in Brazil’s heat and coastal air, so design for easy field service from day one.

Not making stacks locally - well, there’s your problem. If the call doesn’t pin down tech (alkaline vs PEM) and require maintainability - modular stacks, DI water conductivity alarms, gas-crossover analyzers with ΔP trips, and “just interlock it” on pressure/vent logic - you’ll ship a science project that trips every hour. Are you steering alkaline to dodge iridium/titanium, or funding a local Ti/coating supply chain for PEM?
