Small fixes that cut drum line downtime in Class I areas
At our Louisville plant we package a lot of solvent-based product, so our drum and tote lines live in Class I, Div 1. The biggest gains this year did not come from new fillers. They came from a few low-cost changes that removed friction.
We moved to weight-based coarse/fine filling with a short dwell, tied to a ground monitor and LEL permissive so the pump cannot start unless the bond is good, exhaust is proven, and atmosphere is clean. We added closed-loop vapor return on the bung to our carbon bed to tame foam and VOCs. A simple torque audit every hour with preset caps caught most of our weepers.
Changeovers were the other unlock. We standardized lance height blocks, color-coded hose and gasket kits, and pre-staged clean nozzles. Recipes lock valve timings and target weights by SKU. That took changeover from roughly 25 minutes to about 14 and cut overfills and rework.
What simple control or mechanical tweak has paid back fastest on your drum or tote lines? Anyone seeing a clear winner between mass flow and scales for thin, high RVP blends?
Biggest payback for us was a normally closed anti‑siphon valve at the nozzle plus a 200 - 300 ms VFD ramp-down tied to the coarse-to-fine switchover; that cut overshoot about 40% and nearly eliminated post-fill weepers. For thin, high RVP blends we stick with scales; mass flow only behaved after we added a backpressure regulator and an inline degasser, otherwise gas entrainment and PD slip pushed accuracy around.
