Stop being the hero; build boring reliability

Early in my career I was the first call when the palletizer mis-picked, a drum nozzle stuck, or a scale drifted. It felt good to be the fixer, but it trained the line to depend on me and hid the real problem: weak standards and no ownership at the point of use.
What changed: I started hunting single points of failure and replacing them with simple, repeatable controls. Operator-safe HMI steps for zero/tare and nozzle clean cycles. Startup checks that take two minutes but prevent an hour of downtime. Kitted spares for photoeyes, solenoids, and load cell cables at the line, not in a locked crib. A visible fault log that we actually close with root cause, not “reset and run.”
One example: our tote filler scale drift calls dropped by most of a shift per week after we added a guided zero routine on the HMI, a daily check on the start screen, labeled the air prep, and staged a spare load cell. No heroics, just fewer calls.
I still jump in when it matters, but we celebrate quiet weeks more than late-night saves. What small standard or habit cut your “only you can fix it” calls?
