This one turned into a finishing episode. Marc broke a finishing rule live on air, we talked faded walnut, frozen glue, hide glue and how to finish two species two different ways in one project, and Greg made the case for good enough. Plus a corded Kreg Edge sighting, new apps, and an ad read Marc will never live down.
Announcements
- Today is the last day for the sale price on the Mid-Century Modern Table Guild course. The final two videos are out, and there is one more live recap session on Tuesday.
- The corded Kreg Edge is real. Viewer Nicholas spotted one on the shelf at Lowe’s, and Kreg tells us it will be at other stores too. Expect a bit more power than the battery version.
- Nicole rebuilt The Wood Whisperer app, with shop calculators (including a wood movement calculator) and our Amazon picks built in. Get it for iPhone or Android, and send feedback with this short form.
- Guild members can now watch their courses, Guild meetings and demos on the TV with the new Guild app on Roku. Apple TV is in review. Tell Nicole which platform to build next.
- All of our partner discount codes now live on one partners page, including MAKRS (code TWW).
What’s on the bench
Marc’s mom did not want the hard wax oil look, so her table got stripped back to bare wood a second time and refinished with a satin, Arm-R-Seal style finish. MAKRS pads made the oil based finish easy to lay down without streaks.
Saw This
What did Marc just order?
VEVOR interlocking floor tiles for the new shed. Water will get in eventually, and these let air move underneath. About $1.50 a square foot compared with $3 to $5 for the name brands.
The Long View with Greg
Greg Batt is stuck choosing a board for a drawer front. Painting with grain matters, but at some point you have to stop letting perfect be the enemy of good, finish the piece, and take what you learned to the next one. Greg is reading Just One Good Chair about Hans Wegner. Follow Greg at @ghbatt.
Your questions
- Long miters on the table saw: immobilize the piece. A sled with a hold down beats a miter gauge, dial it in to a perfect 45 with test cuts, and fix anything left over on a shooting board.
- Hide glue as a wood glue substitute: for interior work, pretty much interchangeable. Titebond Liquid Hide Glue is comparable to Titebond Original in strength and actually held up better after a night at 150 degrees. Not for outdoor work, it is moisture sensitive.
- Epoxy with a long open time: Marc uses TotalBoat epoxy with the pumps, slow version. Both Titebond and TotalBoat sponsored Woodworkers for a Cause this year, which raised over $28,000.
- Moving a shop: Marc has done it a few times. Start with Moving Out of the Dream Shop, Moving Again?! Yup! and the rest of the Marc’s Shop videos. Grab Marc’s moving checklist (PDF).
- Sun faded walnut under Rubio: it is the wood that faded, not the finish. You can spot repair it, but the fresh wood will be darker than the rest of the top, so if you must fix it, do the whole top.
- Waterlox over a hard wax oil: you are not supposed to do it, so Marc did it. Waterlox over Natural One Coat looks great today. Whether it peels over time is the real test, and he will report back.
- Refinishing a beat up pine coffee table: consider whether the patina is the charm. If not, steam the dents and plane, scrape and sand. Marc’s DIY refinishing series tackles a similar job.
- Loose vs traditional mortise and tenon: mostly time, convenience and mood. Loose tenons are plenty strong; a hand made joint is about pride.
- A mantel without a miter saw: a miter box and a shooting board will get you there, but for a lot of cuts, a miter saw is worth it. The same question came up on Wood Talk this week.
- Frozen glues and finishes: test each can. Water based finishes are the biggest risk, Titebond glues survive several freeze thaw cycles, and oil based finishes and epoxy are probably fine if they mix up normally.
- Storing dried lumber outdoors: sticker, stack, keep rain and direct sun off it and give it airflow. A lean-to is ideal.
- Different finishes on walnut and white oak in one bed: prefinish. If masking gave you trouble, work on your masking. A little finish in a joint is not the end of the world.
- Wood movement and drawer fronts: an eighth inch gap is plenty for most shops. Sagging slides cause more collisions than wood movement. Check the wood movement calculator in the app.
- Backside Sandpaper 180 grit: on hold until it can be manufactured. Marc hates making it by hand.
