Samsung E&A and Nel jointly launch new electrolysis platform for green hydrogen

This article was originally posted on Chemical Engineering Online.

Samsung E&A (Seoul, South Korea), in partnership with Nel Hydrogen ASA (Oslo, Norway), launched CompassH2-A+, a 100 megawatt pressurized alkaline electrolysis solution at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam. The new offering marks the third product in the CompassH2 lineup — a portfolio that now spans atmospheric alkaline, pressurized alkaline, and Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) […]

100 MW pressurized alkaline sounds great, but how fast can it ramp and what’s the turndown without chewing up electrodes? In our pilot, DI water quality and KOH cleanup caused most of the downtime, not the stacks, so I’m curious about their electrolyte purification loop and diaphragm replacement schedule.

100 MW pressurized alkaline is nice, but what are the guaranteed turndown and ramp rates on variable renewables, and how does that hit stack life? In the real world our pain is KOH carryover and H2/O2 crossover on pressure trips, so what’s the mist elimination and DP interlock strategy and is there an active purge on transients?
